Dance Fitness Shoes – Choosing a Shoe For Zumba Class

By S. McRee

One of the most frequently asked questions I get as a Zumba instructor is regarding the type of shoe to wear. Zumba is a cardio exercise class that combines both dancing and fitness moves. A regular dance shoe will not have the shock absorption for the impact of exercise, and an athletic shoe that is strictly for training may not have the lightness and movement capabilities needed for dancing.

The answer is to get a dance-fitness or dance-aerobic shoe. With the increased popularity in dance-fitness classes such as cardio salsa, hip-hop fitness and Zumba, the shoe manufacturers have come out with a great assortment of aerobic type training shoes geared to the dance-fitness enthusiast. These shoes have multi-directional support and very little tread on the sole. They are lightweight and make it easy to pivot and glide across the floor.

When choosing the right shoes for your feet, read the reviews or descriptions online. If you have a wide foot, narrow foot, or high arch, for example, there may be a brand of shoe that is better suited for you. Nike and Ryka brands have a popular selection of dance aerobic shoes to choose from.

Adding a well-cushioned insert to the shoe will make it much more comfortable. Take out the insert that the shoe comes with and place in one that is designed specifically for cross training or aerobics. Replacing the inserts often will extend the life of the shoe itself.

Athletic shoes should be replaced every 3 to 6 months, depending on how much mileage you put on them. When you feel your knees and legs begin to ache after exercise it could mean that it is time to get a new pair of shoes.

In summary, the best shoe for a dance-fitness class is one that is lightweight, supportive and has little tread on the sole. Find one specifically made for dance-fitness or dance aerobics. When you are wearing the right shoes you will have a better exercise experience, you will stick to your exercising and you will have more fun.

Zumba Clothing – What is the Best Workout Clothes to Wear

By Melissa Marcketta

Is Zumba clothing important? Whether you are doing an aerobic or cardio class the correct attire can make your workouts easier. And it’s no different with Zumba. There are so many different styles, brands, fabrics and types available today that the task of choosing the proper work-out clothes can be somewhat daunting. Besides everyone has their own personal favorites. Here are some of my favorite dance work out apparel that I personally where in all my classes.

One last thing, many of our existing customers are wearing just any old garment to their classes. We used to do the same thing but what we found is that when you wear clothing that is not only comfortable to workout in but that you look good in, you will enjoy your workouts more! Recent studies suggest that you are more apt to continue your exercise program if you have the proper attire and are happy with the way you look in your workout clothes.

Besides Zumba is all about having fun. So take a little time and find the right cargo pants, tank tops and other apparel to maximize your experience.

Zumba Cargo Pants

It is important to have comfortable pants that move with you. Clothing that restricts your movement is not advised. You need to have exercise clothing that moves with you. These should also be made of a breathable stuff. A newer fabric out today is Supplex. Supplex is a fully breathable fabric that is soft and feels like cotton but made to stretch with you and go right back into place time after time. This fabric does not pill either.

This material also keeps its color very well wash after wash and dries quicker than cotton. This is one type of exercise material we recommend. Another good material you will really like is Dri Fit®. In our opinion, it holds it’s shape well and keeps moisture away from your body. Another option are the very hip and very popular cargo pants that you see many of the instructors wear on the videos.

They are available in a tremendous array of vibrant colors and sizes and styles. The “hipster” style has a little narrower leg and a shorter rise. They also carry plus size workout clothing.

Zumba Creator Alberto Beto Perez

By Melissa Marcketta

Alberto Beto Perez is the creator of Zumba. Beto a native of Colombia (South America) is the founder of Zumba and director of the national Master trainers team. Beto Perez is also a celebrity choreographer and a Pro dancer. Having choreographed for Shakira and other celebrities. If you wondered what the word Zumba means, it means to move fast and have a lot of fun. His style of aerobics dance workout uses Latin inspired dance steps such as Salsa, Merengue, Flamenco and Samba. Recently hip hop and other exciting dances have been added to the dance mix.

Beto Perez created this Latin-based dance workout quite by accident, as the story goes one day as he rushed out of this house to teach his aerobics class he forgot his regular music tapes. As soon as he realized this, he grabbed some Latin music tapes that were in his car and began teaching the class to this music. The class exploded and became the most popular class in Colombia. He named this class “Rumbacize.”

Beto Perez arrived in Miami, Florida in 1999. There he met two young Colombian entrepreneurs who convinced him to change the name and to begin marketing his fitness philosophy throughout the world. By 2008 the small aerobic fitness company had well over 20,000 certified instructors and DVD sales in excess of 3 million.

(Recently Beto has added different music to the fitness workout, introducing a little bit of country music, funk rock ‘n roll and many other exciting beats.) However, he has also been adding additional products to the companies fitness line. Recently he launched a dance workout for individuals who are complete beginners, never having exercised much before; active older adults and individuals who are physically limited. He called this product Zumba Gold. In addition, another recent release is a product design for kids. With most young children not getting enough physical exercise this new product has received an overwhelming response. The new Zumba kids program is providing children with the ability to exercise and at the same time have fun.

The international market has not been neglected the company just recently opened up China and has representatives in over 40 different countries throughout the world. This Latin dance workout is taking over the world.

The company has aligned itself with Mark Burnett productions (of “Survivor” fame) and Emilio Estefan (husband of Gloria Estefan) to begin marketing the fitness dance products in the Hispanic market through television. But Mr. Burnett is not the only one in Hollywood to have noticed the incredible popularity of this Latin inspireddance workout. Many famous A-list Hollywood celebrities such as Ricky Martin, Eva LaRue (“C.S.I. Miami”), Vivica A. Fox (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), Stacy Kiebler (“Dancing with the Stars”), Hunter Tylo (“The Bold & the Beautiful”), and former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres have “ditched the workout and joined the party” with ZUMBA. from a small boy in South America to an American success story once again Alberto Beto Perez has proven that the American dream is real. He is a true “rags to riches” success story!

Zumba Music – It’s All About The Music

by Melissa Marcketta
The essence or key to Zumba is truly the music and the single most important element of the class.

To watch free videos, music, reviews of dance shoes and workout clothing please visit here: http://zumbafitnessnj.com/
An excellent Zumba class is one in which you “feel the music”. The dance steps and exercise moves are just a plus, but it would not be Zumba without the sizzling, toe tapping, hip swiveling music that makes you just want to get up and move! The music makes it Zumba.

A “Zumba Basic” class is normally one hour long and usually is based on Latin rhythms. Remember that every instructor is different and may have a different mix of Zumba music. Many instructors these days add a lot of “hip hop” into their class as that is what many students request.

The typical music format for a Zumba class consists of 2-3 warm-up songs, 7-10 songs for the actual workout and 1-2 cool down songs. These numbers will vary slightly depending on the length of each song an instructor uses. Zumba® Fitness suggests their instructors use no more than a 70/30 ratio. In other words, 70% of Zumba music used in class should be Latin rhythms and the other 30% can be whatever type the instructor chooses. Most recently, Zumba® Fitness incorporated some other types of music into their program such as Belly Dance, Tango, Twist, Country and Rock ‘n Roll. An example is on the Zumba® Fitness CD “Cardio Party”. The newest CD, “Party Nation”, has a little of everything too. It targets the Latin rhythms music as well as music for Belly Dance and Tango.

Zumba Instructors can make up their own routines and can choose their own Zumba music. Many instructors download songs from iTunes Store Music or other music download sites. However, if instructors choose to be a part of ZIN (Zumba Instructor Network), Zumba music CDs and/or choreography CDs are sent to them every month. The CDs contain Zumba® Music they can use and the choreographed DVDs contain steps to each song. Instructors can choose to use them entirely or take bits and pieces of them for their classes or may only use a few songs. Membership into ZIN is considered continuing education and therefore meets the requirements needed to keep the status of Zumba® Instructor.

For Zumba Gold, many times the same music can be used. A Zumba Gold class is for the beginning exerciser, people who are not used to exercising, and active older adults. The steps are done at a slower pace and transitional moves are used more. Zumba® Fitness also has a Zumba® Gold music CD available to people who take the Zumba® Gold Workshop. I have heard they may be releasing a new one soon, but no date has been set. Zumba music on the Gold CD include; C’mon and Dance (Merengue); Cabo de la Vela (Salsa Cha Cha); Zumba Cumbia (Cumbia); Ya Llego (Salsa); El Twist de la Munequita (Rock ‘n Roll). Warm ups are Muevete Pa Ca Muevete Pa lla and Quien Balia, Quien Goza. The cool downs are Mi Ritmo and Aromuzak. Remember these are done at a slower beat.
